Using the AVDI with BMW DIS via ebridge and a virtual diagnostic head (VMware networking)

Strumenti Interface Classic Diagnostics Advanced ⏱ 30-60 min 12 steps

BMW DIS does not use passthru but talks over the network to a diagnostic head: the Abrites ebridge program creates this virtual head on the host PC and exposes it to the virtual machine running DIS. It is what you need to diagnose older-generation BMWs on K-Line and CAN.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • cavo USB
  • PC con VMware
⚠ WarningThe IP address of the VMware VMnet1 adapter must be set manually to 192.168.68.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0: that is the address DIS uses to find the diagnostic head. If the AVDI is not recognised by ebridge a warning message will appear: sort out the USB connection before carrying on.

Procedure

  1. Open File Explorer, type "C:\Windows\System32\ncpa.cpl" in the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Right-click on "VMware Network Adapter VMnet1" and choose "Properties".
  3. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" (or "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" depending on the Windows version) and click "Properties".
  4. Choose "Use the following IP address" and enter IP address 192.168.68.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0, then confirm.
  5. From the Start menu open "Start -> All Programs -> ABRITES Software for ID XXXXXX" and select "ebridge" (XXXXXX is your AVDI number); check that the interface is recognised.
  6. In the ebridge window choose "CAN" or "Kline" depending on the vehicle, click on "DIS DiagHead" and in the window that opens choose "Run" from the menu.
  7. Start VMWare and run the virtual machine with DIS.
  8. From the VMWare menu select "Virtual Machine" -> "Removable devices" -> Network adapter -> "Connect", repeating the operation for all the network adapters (1, 2, 3 and so on).
  9. In the VM with DIS press the "Administration" button at the bottom right, then "Connection setup".
  10. Under "Free diagnostic heads" the name of your host PC must appear followed by the address 192.168.68.1: select it and press "Test", then "Connecting".
  11. Once the connection is established press the arrow button at the bottom left and check that at the bottom of the "BMW Diagnostic Head V1.2" window the status is "Connected".
  12. You can now start working with the DIS diagnostic system through the AVDI.
