Mercedes-Benz IR keys: reading the SSID, erasing and programming the NEC with ZN032 / ZN033

With the ABPROG NEC adapters you can read, erase and reprogram the NEC microcontrollers in Mercedes-Benz infrared keys, for example to make a used key virgin again. The ZN033 needs the NEC soldered onto the adapter, the ZN032 has a socket and needs no soldering.

Procedure

1. Strip the IR key PCB and take out the NEC microcontroller: with the ZN032 you drop it into the socket and close the lid, with the ZN033 you have to solder it onto the adapter.
2. If you're using a ZN033 you already own, check for the resistor shown on page 23 of the manual and desolder it if necessary.
3. Connect the NEC adapter (ZN032 or ZN033) to the DB-25 on the ZN045 and the ZN045 to the DB-15 on the AVDI.
4. Start the "ABPROG Programmer For AVDI" software and select "MB NEC KEY" from the drop-down menu, then state the PCB revision of your ABPROG as shown on page 22.
5. To read the chip identifier use the SSID read function: the value read is displayed on screen.
6. To make the key virgin, run the NEC erase, then use the verify function to check the information is no longer present.
7. To reprogram, load the key dump and run the NEC programming.
8. As an alternative to desoldering the NEC you can program the CPU directly on the key using the ABPROG flat cable, connecting PIN 16 and PINs 12, 13, 24, 25 as shown on page 46.
