Reading and writing SPI, I2C and Microwire EEPROMs with ABPROG and the ZN031/ZN035 adapter

Strumenti Interface Classic Flashing / Programming Medium ⏱ 15-30 min 8 steps

The ZN031 ABPROG EEPROM/BCM adapter lets you read, write and erase the serial memories most commonly found in ECUs and instrument clusters: SPI (M95 and M35080 families), I2C (24Cxx family) and Microwire (93Cxx family). With the ZN035 socket you work on 8-pin memories with no soldering.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • ZN045
  • ZN031
  • ZN035
  • CB101
⚠ WarningBefore writing any memory, always save the original dump you read: it's the only way back if the file you wrote turns out to be wrong.

Procedure

  1. Connect the ZN031 adapter to the female DB-25 on the ZN045 and the ZN045 to the DB-15 on the AVDI.
  2. If the memory is a desolderable 8-pin, drop it into the ZN035 socket respecting the pin 1 index mark; otherwise solder the adapter wires to the memory's legs on the board.
  3. Start "ABProg" > "Classic" and select "EEPROM" from the drop-down menu.
  4. Pick the exact memory type from the supported list: SPI ST M35080VP/M35080V6, ST D080D0WQ, ST D160D0WQ, M95010, M95020, M95040, M95080, M95160, M95320, M95640, M95128, M95256, M95P08; I2C 24C01, 24C02, 24C08, 24C16, 24C32, 24C64, 24C128, 24C256, 24C512, 24C1024; Microwire 93C46, 93C56, 93C66, 93C76, 93C86 in 8-bit or 16-bit organisation.
  5. Hit the read button and wait for it to finish; with Microwire devices, if the dump looks inconsistent, try again switching between 8-bit and 16-bit organisation.
  6. Save the dump you read to the PC as a backup file, naming it so you can identify vehicle, module and date.
  7. To write: load the file with "Load", check that memory type and size match, then start the write.
  8. When it's done, read the memory back and compare it against the file you wrote to confirm the programming went through.
