ABPROG DB25 pinout: building your own ZN046, ZN058, ZN078 and ZN086 adapters

Strumenti Interface Classic Hardware / Connections Advanced ⏱ 30-60 min 7 steps

The male DB25 connector included in the ZN030 set lets you build the adapter you need when you don't own the original. Here are the full pinouts from the manual, with wire colours and the extra components.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • ZN045
  • DB25 Male Connector
  • ZN046
  • ZN058
  • ZN078
  • ZN086
⚠ WarningThe pinouts include mandatory passive components (resistors and a diode): leave them out and communication won't work, and in some cases you can damage the MCU or the programmer. Check every wire with a multimeter before plugging the connector in.

Procedure

  1. ZN046 adapter (key renewal): PIN 1, PIN 2, PIN 3 and PIN 4 red wire; PIN 5 RX green wire; PIN 6 TX white wire; PIN 14 GND black wire. Fit a 38K resistor between PIN 6 and PIN 14.
  2. ZN058 adapter (V850E2): PIN 5 RX purple wire; PIN 6 TX purple wire; PIN 13 FLMD0 white wire; PIN 14 GND black wire; PIN 20 +5V red wire; PIN 25 Reset green wire. Fit a 10K resistor between PIN 5 and PIN 20 and a 1N4148 diode between PIN 5 and PIN 6.
  3. ZN078 adapter (V850ES): PIN 5 RX purple wire; PIN 6 TX blue wire; PIN 13 FLMD0 white wire; PIN 14 GND black wire; PIN 20 +5V red wire; PIN 25 Reset green wire.
  4. ZN086 adapter (MC9S12): PIN 14 GND black wire 0.25; PIN 21 +5V red wire 0.25; PIN 11 RST yellow wire 0.11; PIN 19 BKGD green wire 0.14.
  5. Solder the wires onto the male DB25 respecting the pin numbering and the wire gauge given, and protect the joints with heat-shrink.
  6. Check pin-by-pin continuity and the absence of shorts with a multimeter, particularly between the supply pin and GND.
  7. Plug the wired DB25 into the ZN045, connect the ZN045 to the AVDI and start the ABPROG software, selecting the function matching the adapter you've replicated.
