Reading the EWS3 dump on BMW E46/E39/E53 and others with the ZN055 adapter

Strumenti Interface Classic Keys / Immo Advanced ⏱ 30-60 min 9 steps

The ZN055 ABPROG EWS3 adapter reads the dump from the BMW EWS3 unit so you can program a key, with no need for third-party EWS3 programmers. The dump you read is then loaded into the PROTAG software.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • ZN045
  • ZN055
  • PROTAG
⚠ WarningThe hook-up requires the boot pin on the EWS to be jumpered as shown in the diagram on page 35 of the manual: getting the boot pin or the power feed wrong can brick the module.

Procedure

  1. Check compatibility: BMW E46, E53, E85, E83, E39, E38 and E52 fitted with the EWS3 module (0D46J and 2D47J masks) are supported.
  2. Remove the EWS3 module from the vehicle and open it up to get to the board.
  3. Connect the ZN055 adapter to the EWS3 following the manual's connection diagram, including the boot pin shown in the drawing.
  4. Connect the ZN055 to the ABPROG ZN045 programmer and the ZN045 to the DB-15 on the AVDI, then the AVDI to the PC.
  5. Start the ABPROG software and select "EWS", then the matching mask (0D46J or 2D47J).
  6. Start the read and wait for the dump to complete.
  7. Save the EWS3 dump to the computer.
  8. Open the PROTAG software, load the saved dump and go ahead with key programming.
  9. When the job is done remove the boot pin jumper and refit the EWS3 to the vehicle.
