ECU Configuration Manager: reading/writing configuration and VIRGIN reset (EDC15, MJD 6JF/8F2, Marelli IAW, ME7)

The ECU Configuration Manager reads and updates the engine ECU's configuration memory over diagnostics, saves and reloads the data from file and allows a reset to factory state ("virgin"). The virgin function is essential to adapt a second-hand ECU to the vehicle, particularly on Marelli Multijet MJD 6JF units.

Procedure

1. Check that the ECU is among the supported ones: EDC15C5, EDC15C7, MJD 6JF/8F2; Marelli IAW 4AF, 4EF, 59F, 5AF, 5AM, 5NF, 5SF3, 8GMF, 8GSF; BOSCH ME7.3H4, ME7.3.1, ME7.2.1 (in boot).
2. Connect the AVDI to the OBDII socket and provide stable power for the whole duration of the job; for ME7 units put the ECU into boot.
3. Start the FCA software and open "ECU configuration manager".
4. Read the ECU's configuration memory and save the original file to the PC.
5. If you only need to update parameters, edit the configuration data and write it to the ECU, then read it back to confirm it has been accepted.
6. To adapt a second-hand ECU, use the factory reset function ("Make VIRGIN"): on Marelli Multijet MJD 6JF units it is supported over OBDII along with memory read/update and calibration.
7. On EDC15C5 (EURO2) and EDC15C7 (EURO3) memory read/update and calibration are available over OBDII; covered models include Alfa 145/146/147/156/166, Fiat Bravo/Brava/Stilo/Marea/Punto/Multipla/Doblo/Ducato/Scudo/Palio/Siena/Marengo and Lancia K/Z/Lybra/Thesis in JTD versions, plus the 1.3 IAW Multijet MJD 6JF (Panda, Grande Punto, Idea, Doblo, Punto, Cinquecento, Musa, Ypsilon).
8. After writing or after the virgin reset, cycle the ignition off and on, carry out the learning procedure the vehicle requires and try starting.
9. Read and clear the DTCs generated during the job, then check that the engine runs correctly.
