ECU Flash Manager: reading and writing flash memory on Marelli and Bosch ECUs (IAW, MJD 6JF, ME7 boot mode)

Fiat/FCA Interface Classic Flashing / Programming Advanced ⏱ 30-60 min 9 steps

The ECU Flash Manager reads and updates the flash memory of engine ECUs over diagnostics and lets you save the files to the PC and write them back into the unit. Supported ECUs: Marelli IAW 4AF/4EF/59F/5AF/5NF/6JF, IAW 5SF3, BOSCH ME7.3H4/ME7.3.1/ME7.2.1 (in BOOT MODE) and MJD 6JF - IMMO OFF.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
⚠ WarningBefore writing any file, read and save the original flash locally: it is your only safety copy if the write is interrupted or the file is wrong. BOSCH ME7.3H4, ME7.3.1 and ME7.2.1 ECUs are supported only in BOOT MODE, not over normal diagnostics.

Procedure

  1. Check that the ECU you are working on is among the supported ones: Marelli IAW 4AF, 4EF, 59F, 5AF, 5NF, 6JF, IAW 5SF3; BOSCH ME7.3H4, ME7.3.1, ME7.2.1 (BOOT MODE only); MJD 6JF for IMMO OFF.
  2. Connect the AVDI to the OBDII socket and provide a stable power supply to the vehicle for the whole duration of the job.
  3. For BOSCH ME7.3H4/ME7.3.1/ME7.2.1 put the ECU into BOOT MODE before starting the read.
  4. Start the FCA software and open "Engine Control Unit Flash Manager".
  5. Read the ECU's flash memory and save the original file to the PC, in a folder dedicated to that vehicle.
  6. Prepare or load the file to be written; for IMMO OFF on MJD 6JF use the dedicated function provided by the Flash Manager.
  7. Start the flash write and do not interrupt the procedure for any reason: do not unplug the interface, do not switch the ignition off, do not move the cables.
  8. Once the write is complete, read the memory back to confirm the content is what you expect.
  9. Cycle the ignition off and on, start the engine and check operation; read and clear any DTC generated during programming.
