ESL (steering lock) adaptation in All Keys Lost on Subaru smart key with ZN085, TA68 and CB012

Subaru Interface New Keys / Immo Advanced ⏱ varies 10 steps

The fix for when, in an all keys lost situation on a Subaru smart system, programming stalls around 90% because of the ESL: steering lock not communicating, missing, or replaced with a used one that was never adapted.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • ZN085
  • TA68
  • CB012
  • SMT unit
⚠ WarningThe bench read of the SMT unit is only needed if you do NOT have a working key. If a working key is available, skip the removal and the RH850 read and use the short sequence.

Procedure

  1. Identify the case: the key learning procedure stops around 90% and goes no further because the ESL does not communicate, is missing or has been replaced without adaptation.
  2. WITHOUT a working key - Remove the SMT unit and read its data flash on the bench with the ZN085 RH850/V850 programmer, since the SMT uses an RH850 processor. The wiring diagram is available directly in the RH850 software.
  3. Prepare a TA68 emulator from the "Key Tool" menu of the Subaru software, starting from the dump you read.
  4. Refit the SMT unit to the car but leave it disconnected from the LIN (K-line), i.e. with its connector unplugged.
  5. Connect to the LIN using the CB012 adapter (the red wire).
  6. Run the second-hand steering lock reset from the "ESL" menu.
  7. Disconnect the CB012 and plug the SMT unit connector back in.
  8. Go into the Smart Key programming menu and select the steering lock synchronization ("steering lock synchronization").
  9. WITH a working key - Unplug the SMT unit from its connector, connect to the LIN with the CB012 (red wire), run the second-hand steering lock reset from the "ESL" menu, disconnect the CB012, plug the SMT back in via its connector and synchronize the steering lock to the car/SMT unit from the Smart Key programming menu.
  10. Resume and complete the key learning procedure that was previously stalling at 90%.
