Volvo NVData: reading, saving and writing module configuration data

Volvo Interface Classic Coding / Adaptations Medium ⏱ 20-45 min 8 steps

The "NVData" special function reads and updates the configuration data of Volvo modules, lets you save it to a file on the PC and load it back to write it into the module. It is the key function when replacing an electronic control unit.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
⚠ WarningBefore writing anything, always save the data read from the original module to file (and, where possible, from the replacement module as well): without that backup you have no way back if the module rejects the data.

Procedure

  1. Plug the AVDI into the OBDII socket and turn the ignition ON.
  2. Start Abrites Diagnostics for Volvo, select the vehicle and open the special functions menu.
  3. Select "NVData" with a double-click: the software shows all the available options.
  4. Choose the module you want to work on from the list.
  5. Read the configuration data from the module and save it to a file on the PC straight away, naming it so it identifies the vehicle, module and date.
  6. If you are replacing the ECU, fit the replacement module, read its data as well and save it as a second backup.
  7. Load the original module's data file from the PC and update (write) the data into the new module.
  8. When finished, cycle the ignition off and on, run a full scan and clear the DTCs generated during the operation, then check that the functions handled by the module work correctly.
