Which VAG key learning procedure applies (procedures 1-8)

VAG Interface Classic Appendix Medium ⏱ varies 9 steps

An overview of the VAG key learning procedures: which one applies depends on the type of vehicle and its year of production. The vehicle/procedure cross-reference is in the appendix of the manual.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • PROTAG
⚠ WarningFrom Immo III onwards it is not enough for the transponder to be of the right type: it must also contain specific records. On Immo IV and Immo V the transponder must be programmed with a code derived from the VIN, unique to each vehicle (dealer key).

Procedure

  1. Procedure 1 - Normal learning, vehicles from 1996 to 09/2006 over K-line: only the PIN is needed, adaptation is done on channel 21, then the ignition has to be switched ON with each key. No transponder preparation, a new TP05 or TP08 transponder/key is used.
  2. Note on procedure 1: some vehicles must be left with the ignition ON for five minutes before starting (VW Golf 5, Skoda Octavia II, VW Touran, Seat Toledo 2004+); others for more than 30 minutes (Skoda Fabia 2006+, Skoda Roomster 2006+, Skoda Superb 2007+, VW Polo 2006+, Seat Ibiza 2006+).
  3. Procedure 2 - CAN vehicles up to 09/2006, VW/Seat/Skoda over CAN: only the PIN is needed, adaptation on channel 1, then ignition ON with each key. Use a virgin key or a TP22 transponder for Seat, TP23 for VW, TP24 for Skoda.
  4. Procedure 3 - VW/Seat/Skoda CAN 2006+, Passat B6, Audi A3 CAN: only the PIN is needed, adaptation on channel 11, then ignition ON with each key. The key must be prepared (dealer key) using the component security (CS) and the vehicle type (VW/Seat/Skoda/Audi).
  5. Procedure 4 - Audi A4 (RB8): Bosch RB8 clusters with integrated immobiliser require a key pre-coded with the 12 bytes of CS; the data for preparing the transponder and the PIN for the adaptation are read automatically from the immobiliser.
  6. Procedure 5 - Vehicles with a Hitag2 key (VW Touareg, VW Phaeton, Bentley Continental, Porsche Cayenne, Audi A8): only the PIN is needed, adaptation on channel 1, then each key must be held in the CRANK position until the steering unlocks. Up to 2007 a virgin PCF7936 transponder or a virgin key is enough; if you use a transponder you have to put it into Cipher (Crypto) mode by replacing 0x06 with 0x0E in the first byte of the configuration page (page 3; page 0 = transponder ID, pages 1 and 2 = secret key). If the value is already 0x0E the transponder is already in cipher mode. From 2007 onwards, and for Audi A8 2002+, the transponder must be pre-coded with the CS.
  7. Procedure 6 - Audi A6, Q7, Allroad 2005+: use the dedicated "EZS-Kessy A6/Q7" special function; Megamos 8E transponder pre-coded with the 12 bytes of CS, then ignition ON with each key.
  8. Procedure 7 - UDS clusters (typically models after 2009, immobiliser integrated in the cluster): a dedicated special function is used, see the manual for the "Instrument CAN" special function. Required transponder: Megamos 48 Crypto, including Megamos 48 keyless-go keys (VW Scirocco, Jetta, Golf 6, Tiguan, Touran 2010+ and others).
  9. Procedure 8 - A4/A5/Q5 2007+ and A6/A7/A8/VW Touareg 2010+: use the dedicated "BCM2 A4/A5/Q5" special function; pre-coded Hitag2Ext key, then ignition ON with each key.
