Simos PCR2.1: unlocking the ECU and reading PIN/CS/MAC

VAG Interface Classic Keys / Immo Advanced ⏱ 60-120 min 9 steps

The "Simos PCR2.1" special function is used to read the PIN/CS/MAC of Simos PCR 2.1 engine ECUs. The procedure has three stages: unlocking the ECU, preparing it for reading via a software update, and reading it over OBDII.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • programmatore EEPROM (95640)
⚠ WarningSelecting a software with a different VAG number to the current one is only needed if you want to re-adapt the ECU to another vehicle: in that case update the ECU to a software with the same VAG number as the old ECU of the car you are fitting it to. In every other case it is recommended not to change the VAG number; if the VAG number stays the same and only the software version changes there is no problem. Unlocking and preparing for reading can ONLY be done from the "Simos PCR2.1" special function.

Procedure

  1. Stage A - unlocking: the ECU can only be read after the EEPROM has been unlocked into so-called "developer mode". You can do this in two ways: by reading/writing the EEPROM with a programmer, or via boot-mode. The drawback of the programmer route is that the EEPROM sits on the underside of the ECU, forcing you to strip the whole housing, whereas the boot-mode connection is far simpler.
  2. Unlocking with a programmer: read the EEPROM (95640) with the programmer.
  3. Press the "Generate UNLOCKED Simos ConfData dump (95640)" button to generate the new dump.
  4. Write the modified dump with the programmer: once written, the ECU is unlocked.
  5. Unlocking via boot-mode: connect the ECU as shown in the wiring diagram.
  6. Press the "Lock/Unlock by boot-mode" button; if it cannot connect to the ECU, power the ECU off and back on and try again.
  7. Check with the "Check ECU status" button: if "ECU is unlocked and now can be prepared for reading" is active, the ECU is unlocked; if "ECU is already unlocked and prepared for reading" appears, the PIN/CS has already been read in the past and no further preparation is needed.
  8. Stage B - preparing for reading: this is done by updating the ECU software. Select the SW version to update to from the program's internal database; in most cases the correct version is selected automatically, otherwise pick it manually.
  9. Stage C - reading: with the ECU prepared, read the PIN/CS/MAC over OBDII. If the ECU is already prepared you can go straight to this last step, and the PIN/CS/MAC read can also be done from the "Immo parts adaptation" and "Engine control unit" special functions.
