Fitting a used RB8 cluster: syncing it with the engine ECU

When you fit a used RB8 instrument cluster to a car you have to sync it with the engine ECU by writing the component protection data and the ECU's MAC into the cluster.

⚠ WarningThere are two types of RB8 cluster: 7-byte and 12-byte component protection. This procedure applies to the 12-byte versions, which are the vast majority; 7-byte ones are mainly found on petrol A4s, while the RS4 is 12-byte.

Procedure

  1. Connect to the engine ECU and read its component protection (component security) data.
  2. Read the engine ECU's MAC as well.
  3. Connect to and read the EEPROM of the used RB8 cluster you want to fit.
  4. Once the read is done the "Reset Comp. Security" button becomes available: press it.
  5. In the window that appears, enter the component security and the MAC read from the engine ECU.
  6. Confirm to write the data and complete the synchronisation between ECU and RB8 cluster.
