CAN Instrument: connecting and identifying the instrument cluster type

VAG Interface Classic Diagnostics Basic ⏱ 5-10 min 6 steps

This is the way in to every special function on the VAG instrument cluster. When you open "CAN Instrument" the software tries to open a diagnostic session with the cluster (KWP2000 over TP2.0 or UDS), reads the module identification and works out the cluster type on its own. You need it every time before mileage, immo or key work.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
⚠ WarningIf you want to pick the cluster manually you have to unplug the AVDI from the OBDII and then open the "Instrument cluster CAN" special function: once the cluster has been detected automatically the software will not show the manual selection window.

Procedure

  1. Plug the AVDI into the car's OBDII socket and start "Abrites Diagnostics for VAG".
  2. Open the "CAN Instrument" special function: the software tries to establish a diagnostic session with the cluster using KWP2000 over TP2.0 or UDS.
  3. If the session is established the software reads the module identification and automatically detects the cluster type among: VDO/MM/Visteon -2007 (CAN TP2.0); VDO with NEC uC 2009+ (CAN UDS); JCI with NEC uC and 95320 EEPROM (CAN UDS); Magneti Marelli with 9S12 uC (CAN UDS); A8(4H)/A7(4G)/A6(4G)/Touareg(7P) with 95320 EEPROM (CAN UDS); VDO based on MQB platform.
  4. If the connection fails or the type is not detected automatically, the manual selection window comes up.
  5. To force manual selection: unplug the AVDI from the OBDII, open the "Instrument cluster CAN" special function and pick the cluster by hand from the list offered.
  6. Carry on with the specific function for the cluster you selected (mileage read, immo, keys).
