The VIN Reader App uses the MODI to read the chassis numbers stored in the vehicle's various control units and compares them against stolen-vehicle databases. It is used to check VIN consistency across modules and to spot discrepancies when inspecting a used car.

⚠ WarningNot all variants of the supported makes are covered and not all manufacturers store the VIN in the control units: some VINs may not be read. Abrites is not liable for the accuracy of the extracted VIN data.
Procedure
Download and install the "VinReader App" from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (search for "vinreader").
Plug the MODI into the vehicle's OBDII port and turn Bluetooth on on the phone.
Open the VIN Reader App and press "Connect" to pair with the MODI device.
Select the make of the vehicle you are working on: the app starts scanning the VIN numbers (and the odometer readings, enabled by default) in the installed control units.
Wait while the MODI interrogates the OBD port and builds the list of modules fitted to the vehicle: next to each module you will see the VIN stored in that unit.
Read the colours in the list: VINs highlighted in green have been automatically checked against the European stolen-vehicle database (www.stolencars24.eu) and the South African one (coza.net.za) with no hits.
If a VIN is highlighted in red it means a record was found in one of the databases: open the pop-up that appears to read the information about the flagged vehicle.
Compare the VINs from the individual modules with each other and with the stamped chassis number and the paperwork: differences between modules are the main sign of replaced control units or tampering.
If you are working without a network connection, go into "Settings" and disable the stolen-vehicle database check: this way the application works completely offline (with the checks enabled it needs internet access).
