Reading the EEPROM of BMW F-Series FEM/BDC in-circuit with the ZN057 extension

The ZN057 is a wire extension for the ZN031 ABPROG EEPROM/BCM adapter: it lets you read chips without desoldering them from the board, typically the EEPROM in BMW F-Series FEM/BDC modules.

Procedure

  1. Remove the FEM or BDC module from the car and open it to get to the board.
  2. Connect the ZN057 to the ZN031 ABPROG EEPROM/BCM adapter: the ZN057 is an extension dedicated to that adapter, not a stand-alone product.
  3. Hook the ZN057 wires to the contact points on the FEM or BDC as shown in the manual's connection photos, without desoldering the chip from the board.
  4. Connect the ZN031 to the DB25 on the ZN045, the ZN045 to the AVDI and the AVDI to the PC.
  5. Start "ABProg" > "Upgraded", press "Select" and choose the memory type in the FEM/BDC.
  6. Press "Read" to read the EEPROM and then "Save" to save the dump to the PC.
  7. If you need to rewrite it, load the file with "Load", program with "Program" and check the result with "Verify".
