"BSL" (bootstrap loader) mode is what you use when the ECU won't read over OBDII or on the bench: you open the unit, solder a boot pin at the point shown in the diagrams and read/write Internal Flash, External/Program Flash and Data Flash through the ZN151 Distribution Box.

⚠ WarningIt is the riskiest method: be EXTREMELY careful and confirm the wiring is 100% correct before attempting a boot read. Always start from the GND wire before all the others, to minimise the risk of damaging the unit. Every diagram also states the resistors required and the exact boot pin position: stick to them.
Procedure
Only fall back on BSL after unsuccessfully trying the OBDII read ("Diag") and the bench read: it's the last resort.
Open the ECU and find the exact internal boot pin position for that ECU model on the manual's diagram.
Solder the boot pin at the position shown and fit the set of resistors the diagram calls for: the boot pin and the full set of resistors are supplied in the ZN151 set along with the DB15 cable.
Wire the unit with the DB15 disconnected from power, starting from GND and following the "BSL connection" diagram for that specific ECU.
Note for ECUs up to TPROT8 (up to 2010/2011): they do not need to go through the ZN151 Distribution Box; if you don't have one, follow the dedicated diagram given in the manual.
Connect the DB15 to the Distribution Box and feed the box with external 12V.
In the software choose "BSL" and select the make of ECU you're working on.
Select the ECU's processor type.
Select "Internal Flash", "External/Program Flash" or "Data flash" and press "Info" to check communication.
Press "Read" to read and save the files, or "Write" to write them to the unit.
