MODI: actuator tests from the control units in Advanced Diagnostics

Strumenti Interface Classic Special Functions Advanced ⏱ 15-30 min 9 steps

In Advanced mode, once you enter a control unit, the MODI gives you the list of available actuators so you can drive and test individual components (for example the electric fuel pump). It is how you tell a failed component from a control or wiring problem.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • MODI (ESP32 v04)
  • smartphone/tablet con app MODI Mobile Diagnostics
⚠ WarningWhen working with actuators and moving parts keep a safe distance and make sure nobody else is near the vehicle. Before major electrical work disconnect the vehicle battery to avoid shocks or short circuits. Some actuators have their own activation rules and conditions: Abrites is not liable if an actuator does not work or does not activate.

Procedure

  1. Make the vehicle safe on a level surface, in a well-ventilated area free of combustible materials, sparks or naked flames.
  2. Plug the MODI into the OBDII port, press "Connect", select the make and wait for automatic vehicle identification.
  3. Go into "Advanced Diagnostics" and scan the modules, then select the control unit that manages the component you want to test.
  4. Before the test, read the module's DTCs and the live values relating to the component: you need them as a reference to interpret the test result.
  5. Press the "Actuators" button on the display: the list of all the components available for that control unit opens.
  6. Move away from moving parts and make sure nobody is near the vehicle or under the bonnet.
  7. Select the component to be tested (for example the electric fuel pump) and run the actuator, respecting the conditions required by the vehicle (ignition, engine off/running, temperature) because some actuators only activate when the conditions are met.
  8. Watch or listen to the component's response and compare it with the live values during activation.
  9. At the end of the test re-read the module's DTCs and, if the test generated any transient codes, clear them after noting down the situation.
