Adapting a virgin ZF 8HP EGS on BMW with ignition cycles (20 minutes)

A procedure carried out on the vehicle with the virginized ZF 8HP EGS already installed: a sequence of ignition on/off cycles that completes the adaptation of the transmission control unit to the car.

⚠ WarningThe procedure runs for 20 minutes with the ignition alternately on and off: use a battery support unit, because a voltage drop halfway through the sequence forces you to start again.

Procedure

  1. Make sure the virginized EGS unit is correctly fitted to the vehicle and that all the transmission connections are in order.
  2. Connect a battery support unit: the sequence takes 20 minutes in total.
  3. Turn the ignition ON and wait 2 minutes without touching anything.
  4. Turn the ignition OFF and wait 2 minutes.
  5. Repeat the ON 2 minutes / OFF 2 minutes pair until you have completed 5 ignition-on and 5 ignition-off cycles.
  6. At the end of the 20 minutes the adaptation is complete; check the gearbox operates correctly and that no fault codes are stored.
  7. Note: if you have written the correct ISN into the TCU using the Dump Tool's ISN function, this procedure is not needed.
