Programming (flashing) control unit firmware with free choice of version

The "Programming" function rewrites control unit firmware with newer, or if needed older, versions. Unlike the official software, it lets you pick an arbitrary flash version: handy for finding the best data flash for engine control units and for sorting out cases the dealer tool cannot close.

Procedure

1. Connect the vehicle to an external power supply capable of holding at least 13.6 V steadily, then connect the AVDI and start the BMW/Mini Online software.
2. Go into the "Programming" function: the software lists the control units with the software version currently in each of them.
3. Read the software's suggestion: in the second field the flash version most compatible with that module is proposed automatically (predictive selection).
4. Decide whether to accept the suggestion or to pick a different flash version manually, newer or older. On engine control units you can try several data flashes one after the other to find the one that works best.
5. Once the version is selected, the programming window opens: check on the display that the supply voltage does not drop below 13.6 V.
6. Press and hold the "START" button to begin the write.
7. Do not touch anything and do not unplug the interface until the procedure has finished.
8. When it is done, check in "Program IDs" that the module's VIN is still correct: some control units need it rewriting after the update.
9. Run a "Scan", clear the faults generated by the programming and check that the module works.
