This lets you swap MD/MG engine control units on BMW G series cars, fitting a new or used unit in place of the original. The procedure uses the configuration data (DFlash) of both the original unit and the replacement one and adapts it to the vehicle through EWS Parts Adaptation.

⚠ WarningYou need the configuration data (DFlash) of BOTH control units, the original and the replacement: without the DFlash of the old unit the procedure cannot be carried out. Powering the vehicle at 13.6 V throughout is recommended.
Procedure
Before removing the original control unit, read and save its configuration data (DFlash) to the PC. DFlash reading on MD/MG units is done with the Engine Control Unit Programming software and the EP003 licence, working on the bench with the dedicated CB023 - BMW MD/MG ECU Connection Cable set and the ZN051 DS Box.
Using the same method, read and save the DFlash of the replacement control unit (new or used).
Fit the replacement control unit to the vehicle and connect the vehicle to an external power supply holding 13.6 V.
Connect the AVDI to the OBDII socket and start the BMW Online software.
Go to the "Keys and Start synchronization" > "EWS Parts Adaptation" > "DME Exchange" menu.
Start the procedure and follow the on-screen messages: it is guided step by step.
When prompted, load the DFlash file of the ORIGINAL (old) control unit first.
When prompted, then load the DFlash file of the REPLACEMENT (new or used) control unit.
Confirm that the vehicle supply is not dropping below 13.6 V and press next: the procedure takes about 5 minutes to complete.
When it is done, check that the engine cranks and starts, run a "Scan" and clear the faults generated during the adaptation.
