Clearing the EWS Tampering fault on the CAS after key programming

During key programming it often happens that the CAS logs the EWS tampering fault, which leaves the vehicle immobilised. This is the sequence to clear it and get the car running again.

⚠ WarningThe keys must be taken out of the cabin and kept away (2 metres is best) for the whole clearing phase: bring them back in too early and the fault returns. The procedure may take a lot of repeated attempts, but it is the only way to work on these cars.

Procedure

  1. Take the keys out of the car and move them away, ideally 2 metres.
  2. Disconnect the battery for about 20 minutes.
  3. Reconnect the battery WITHOUT bringing the keys back into the car.
  4. Get the software communicating and try to clear the DTC.
  5. If it does not clear straight away, switch the lights on and off and lock and unlock the car: at that point the DTC clears.
  6. Run the CAS - EGS synchronisation.
  7. Bring the keys back into the cabin and run the synchronisation again.
  8. The tampering fault should disappear and the car should start. If it does not, repeat the whole sequence: it may take several attempts.
