Key programming for 911 996, GT2 996, GT3 996, Boxster 986 and Carrera GT (Alarm module)

Porsche Interface Classic Keys / Immo Medium ⏱ 20-40 min 11 steps

The "Teach keys" function for the 911 996, GT2 996, GT3 996, Boxster 986 and Carrera GT: it connects to the "Alarm" module and writes the key ID into one of the four available slots. Use it to add a key or to rebuild the set of keys the car accepts.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • cavo OBDII
⚠ WarningTo complete the read and write you need the 3-byte "Key learning code" of the Alarm module: either you already have it noted down, or you have to extract it by loading the alarm configuration data dump. The "Erase all" button erases ALL learned keys: once you press it, no existing key works until you relearn it.

Procedure

  1. Connect the AVDI to the vehicle's OBDII socket and start "Abrites Diagnostics for Porsche".
  2. Open the "Special Functions" and select "Key learning", then press "Open" to open the function.
  3. Select the procedure "Teach keys - GT2 996, GT3 996, 911 996, Boxster 986, Carrera GT" and press "Next".
  4. Press "Start": the software connects to the "Alarm" module and reads the keys the car currently accepts, shown in the four slots 1, 2, 3 and 4.
  5. When the software asks for it, enter the 3-byte "Key learning code" of the Alarm module. If you don't know it, extract it by loading the alarm configuration data dump (see the "Dump Tool" function).
  6. Put the key you want to learn into the ignition lock.
  7. Click the slot (1 to 4) you want to write the key into.
  8. Press "Learn": the software writes the key ID into the chosen slot of the Alarm module. The key is learned.
  9. Repeat from step 6 for each additional key to be learned, choosing a different slot each time.
  10. If you need to completely wipe the key set, press "Erase all" and then relearn all the keys you need.
  11. Press "Stop" to disconnect from the Alarm module and check the car starts with every programmed key.
