Clearing crash data on Opel/Vauxhall airbag modules (TEMIC 68HC908, SIEMENS 68HC11E9)

An essential function for body repair shops: after a crash the crash data stored in the airbag module has to be cleared. The procedure is also needed after routine airbag module servicing with replacement of the gas generator.

Procedure

1. Complete the vehicle repair and the replacement of the damaged airbag components, including the gas generator where applicable.
2. Connect the AVDI, ignition ON, and open the Opel/Vauxhall software.
3. From the "Special Functions" list start the "Airbag" function by double-clicking it or by selecting it and pressing "Open".
4. Select the vehicle and the airbag module fitted, then clear the crash data following the on-screen prompts.
5. If the module cannot be handled over OBD, remove the airbag control unit and read its EEPROM with an external programmer.
6. Open the "Dump tool" function, select the matching unit and load the file you have read: supported modules are Airbag TEMIC (68HC908) GM24 417 006 and GM24 417 007 and Airbag SIEMENS (68HC11E9) GM 24416701 DJ.
7. Press the "Parameters..." button and use the crash data clearing entry ("Clear crash data"), then confirm with "OK": the dump is updated and all the required checksums are recalculated automatically.
8. Write the corrected file back to the EEPROM with the programmer, refit the control unit and reconnect every connector with the battery disconnected.
9. Turn the ignition back on, re-read the airbag module DTCs and clear them: the airbag warning lamp must go out after the self-test cycle.
