Clearing the "DEF" error on RB8 / RB4 clusters

On Audi A4 Bosch RB8/RB4 clusters showing "DEF" on the display, the software provides the "Repair RB8 DEF" and "Repair RB4 DEF" buttons to clear the fault and re-adapt the cluster to the vehicle.

Procedure

1. Select the correct cluster type (ICP): "Instrument Cluster Audi A4 BOSCH RB8 CRYPTO 2004+" or "Instrument Cluster Audi A4 BOSCH RB4 CRYPTO 2001+".
2. Read and save the cluster EEPROM and note down its "Login" code.
3. Press the "Repair RB8 DEF" button (or "Repair RB4 DEF", depending on the type selected) to start clearing the "DEF" message.
4. Let the software work: it reads, modifies and rewrites the cluster EEPROM; the "Error" message on the display during the operation is normal.
5. Once the write is finished, the software attempts to adapt the cluster to the vehicle automatically (adaptation on channel 50); this requires a security access login with code 13861.
6. In most cases the cluster is not ready to accept the security access straight away: you have to wait.
7. Choose whether to let the software complete the procedure automatically or to finish it manually.
8. In automatic mode, once the wait is over the software adapts the cluster's security code on channel 50 by itself; on RB8 it then asks whether to transfer the old keys or learn a fresh set with the "Key learning" special function.
9. In manual mode: wait a while with the ignition "ON", connect to the instrument cluster with standard diagnostics, perform the security access (Login) with code 13861 and adapt the cluster's access code on channel 50; after that you have to learn the new keys with the "Key learning" special function.
10. On RB4 you must learn all the keys with the "Key learning" special function once the procedure is finished, in any case.
