Connecting to the Toyota/Lexus Smart System internal CAN with CB012 and the CB031 bypass cable (CAN H / CAN L pinout)

Some Toyota/Lexus models require, on top of OBDII, a direct connection to the Smart System's internal CAN. This sheet explains which models need it, the connector pinout and how to use the CB031 extension cable so you do not have to pierce the wires.

⚠ WarningOn most models the CB012 internal CAN connection is no longer needed: only connect it when the software specifically asks for it or on the models listed.

Procedure

  1. Check whether the model requires the internal CAN. The models covered by the TN014, TN015 and TN016 licences need the CB012 connection: Yaris 2020+ (XP210) BA HT-AES, Yaris Cross 2021+ (XP210) BA HT-AES, Corolla Facelift 2022+ (E210) BA HT-AES, Corolla Cross Facelift 2022+ (XG10) BA HT-AES, Sienna 2020+ (XL40) BA DST-AES, Harrier/Venza 2020+ (XU80) BA DST-AES, Tundra 2021+ (XK70) BA DST-AES, Land Cruiser 2021+ (J300) BA DST-AES, RAV4 Facelift 2022+ (XA50) BA DST-AES, Aygo X 2022+, Yaris GR 2021+, Prius WX60 2022+, BZ4X 2022+, Lexus RX 2022+ B9 DST-AES, Lexus NX 2021+ B9 DST-AES, Lexus LX 2021+.
  2. Locate the Smart System connector. All Toyota/Lexus models covered by the TN011, TN012 and TN013 licences share the same Smart System pinout for the internal CAN connection: PIN 1 = CAN H, PIN 2 = CAN L.
  3. Connection with the CB012 alone: connect the CB012 to the AVDI and take the two CAN leads to PIN 1 (CAN H) and PIN 2 (CAN L) of the Smart System connector.
  4. Recommended connection with CB031 (extension for Toyota/Lexus Smart System with B9/BA key): unplug the Smart System connector.
  5. Connect the CB031 to the Smart System on one side and to the vehicle harness connector on the other: the cable works as a bypass, so you do not have to find and pierce the CAN wires.
  6. Connect the dedicated slots on the CB031 to the CAN connectors of the CB012 (red and blue).
  7. Use this connection for all keys lost as well, when you have to read the Smart System module.
  8. When the software asks for the internal CAN connection during the procedure, confirm only after you have checked that CAN H / CAN L match correctly.
