Toyota/Lexus/Scion Key Learning: identifying the immobiliser system and the rules to follow

Toyota/Lexus Interface Classic Keys / Immo Medium ⏱ varies 8 steps

The "Key Learning" special function identifies the type of immobiliser system fitted to the vehicle on its own and walks you through key programming. Before running it you need to understand the rules common to all Toyota/Lexus/Scion systems, because a reset done at the wrong moment kills the module for good.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • cavo OBDII
  • PROTAG
⚠ WarningOnce the immobiliser has been reset, program at least two keys before attempting another reset. Resetting the immobiliser while it is in key learning state destroys the module permanently and it can only be recovered with the "Dump Tool" function. On top of that, once the smart key learning procedure has started, do not close the driver's door and do not switch the ignition off until a master key has been learned.

Procedure

  1. From the main screen press "Special Functions" and select "Key learning". From here on, follow the on-screen instructions to the letter.
  2. Let the software identify the immobiliser system automatically. It recognises: immobiliser integrated in the engine ECU (4C transponder); separate immobox synchronised with the engine ECU (4C); Tokai Rika 1st generation, Tokai Rika 2nd generation, VALEO and VISTEON immoboxes (40-bit 4D transponder); Tokai Rika immobox with G-type key (80 bit / DST80); Tokai Rika immobox with H-type key (128 bit / DST AES); Smart Access System with G-type key (80 bit) and with H-type key (128 bit).
  3. Answer the software's question about working keys already available. If you have a working master you can add new keys without resetting the immobiliser system: that is always the route to prefer.
  4. If you have no working master, the software offers to reset the immobiliser or the smart module and put it into "after sale" state.
  5. Always program a MASTER key first: after a system reset the first key programmed must be a master, and at least one master must stay registered in the immobiliser.
  6. Bear in mind that in many cases the immobiliser needs at least two keys registered to close the learning process: get the keys/transponders you need ready before you start.
  7. Remember that "Key Learning" only deals with the transponder part of the key. To program the remote, exit to the main diagnostics screen, enter the "Main Body" module and press the "Special" button.
  8. For vehicles built after 2018 with smart systems, the key learning procedures are not in this manual but in the Abrites Toyota Online User Manual.
