W202/W208/W210: risks of reading the password from a working key

Mercedes Interface Classic Keys / Immo Advanced ⏱ varies 5 steps

On the older Mercedes models (W202, W208, W210) it is better to read the password from the EZS with the IR adapter rather than from a working key. This card explains why, and what to do if the read from the key hangs.

⚠ WarningReading the password from a working key on W202/W208/W210 puts the key itself, the EZS and the ESL at risk: the processors in these units and in the keys have limited processing power and can stop working. If the process does not complete or hangs at a certain point, it means the key or the EZS has already failed.

Procedure

  1. On W202, W208 and W210, read the password from the EZS using the IR adapter, not from a working key.
  2. If you did start the read from a working key and the procedure will not complete or sits at the same point, treat the key or the EZS as dead.
  3. In that case disconnect the vehicle battery for 4-5 minutes and reconnect it: this normally resets the EZS.
  4. Check the working key: it may still have been left unusable.
  5. Go back and read the password using the IR adapter.
