VIN Calibration over OBDII on Hyundai/KIA: writing the VIN to ECM, VCU and digital cluster

Hyundai/Kia Interface New Coding / Adaptations Medium ⏱ 15-30 min 11 steps

VIN Calibration completes the unit replacement job: after neutralisation it lets you align the modules' VIN over OBDII. Unlike other tools, including the official Hyundai/KIA diagnostics which only allow writing to new units, this function works on both new and used units.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI

Procedure

  1. Connect the AVDI to the OBDII socket and start the Hyundai/KIA Online software, completing the vehicle selection.
  2. Check that the module concerned is among the supported ones: ECM (engine ECU) on standard vehicles, VCU (engine ECU) on electric vehicles, digital instrument cluster if the module holds the VIN.
  3. From the main screen, on the left-hand side, press the "VIN Calibration" button.
  4. The list of modules that can hold the VIN opens: select each module whose VIN you want to read and compare the values to work out which unit is out of line.
  5. Select the module that has the correct VIN (in the manual's example the instrument cluster, CLU) and press "Read VIN" to read it.
  6. Press the "copy" option on the right-hand side: the VIN is copied to the clipboard.
  7. Select the module to be corrected (in the example the engine ECU, VCU).
  8. Press "Edit VIN": a pop-up window opens.
  9. Paste the VIN copied in the previous step into the window.
  10. Press "Write VIN" to write the VIN into the module and wait for the procedure to finish.
  11. Re-read the VIN from the modules concerned to confirm they are now aligned.
