Synchronising the ID Code Box with the Smart System ("Sync SMT") and with the engine ECU ("Sync Engine") on Toyota/Lexus - DTC B279986

After an ID Code Box reset, or when the ID Code Box or the engine ECU (ECU/HV) is replaced, the ID Code Box has to be adapted (synchronised) first to the Smart System and then to the engine ECU. Both procedures are carried out over OBDII from the "ID Code Box" menu.

Procedure

1. Connect the AVDI to the CB106 and the CB106 to the vehicle's OBDII socket. Both synchronisations are carried out over OBDII.
2. Connect the car to an external power supply for the whole duration of the work.
3. Synchronisation with the Smart System: open the Toyota Online software.
4. Select the "ID Code Box" special function. At this point the ignition must be at IGN ON with a working key.
5. Press "Sync SMT": at the end of the procedure the Smart System and the ID Code Box are synchronised. The engine ECU, however, still has to be synchronised.
6. Synchronisation with the engine ECU: needed after replacing the ID Code Box or the engine ECU (ECU/HV). If the ECU synchronisation is lost the vehicle stores DTC "B279986", which points exactly to the need to run the ECU Sync procedure.
7. With the Toyota Online software open, select the "ID Code Box" special function again.
8. Press "Sync Engine" and wait: the procedure takes about 40 minutes.
9. Do not touch anything in the vehicle while it runs, until the completion message appears.
10. At the end check that the car works fully (starting, key recognition) and re-read the DTCs to make sure B279986 is no longer present.
