VGS4-500-NAG2 (Type 2): reading FBS4 data, virgin state and personalising the 7G-Tronic TCU

Full job on second-generation 7G-Tronic VGS4-500 NAG2 (Type 2) transmission control units: how to read and save the FBS4 data, how to take a used replacement unit back to virgin, and how to personalise it to the car.

Procedure

1. Pick the connection to suit the job: on the car via OBDII plus internal CAN (diagnostic CAN); on the bench with ZN151 or ZN051 plus the CB403 cable; or via ABProg, which involves a bit of mechanical work on the unit.
2. READING - Connect the unit, open the Mercedes FBS4 Manager software and select "TCU" (reading over OBDII with MN032 active, or via ABProg with MN035 active).
3. Press "Info" to establish the connection.
4. Press "Save" to read and save the FBS4 data to a file on the PC.
5. Once the read is done, back up the configuration: TCU > "Utilities" > "Save All Config Data".
6. Write down the software version of the original TCU and its VIN in a text file, as extra insurance.
7. VIRGIN - If you are using a second-hand donor unit, connect it on the bench with the ABProg, open the software and select "TCU".
8. Press "Info" to check the state of the unit and establish the connection, then press "Virgin" to take it back to virgin state. Once that is done the unit is ready for personalisation.
9. PERSONALISATION - Connect the unit (over OBDII with MN034 active, or via ABProg with MN035 active), open the software and select "TCU".
10. Press "Info" to establish the connection.
11. Press "Personalize" and select the file with the FBS4 data saved from the original TCU.
12. Program the configuration data with "Utilities" > "Program All Config Data", using the files saved from the original.
13. Set the VIN of the car.
14. If the software versions need to be matched up, use the "Program" button.
