Before any FBS4 read, virginizing or personalization you have to pick the right connection: OBDII, OBDII plus direct CAN, or bench with the DS Box. Here are all the combinations the manual provides for, plus the special cases.

⚠ WarningThe AVDI + ZN051 DS-Box + CB106 combination (CAN on pins 3-11 of the DS Box and needle connectors on the internal CAN) does NOT work on vehicles with W213/W907/W177 type EZS: on those, personalization has to be done using the CB012 for the CAN connection. For bench work the ZN074 set is recommended to power the ZN051 DS Box.
In-vehicle work with direct CAN (required for personalization): AVDI + CB106 + CB012 Direct CAN-BUS Connection Cable Set, with the needle connectors on the internal CAN (blue CAN wires).
In-vehicle work with the DS Box: AVDI + ZN051 DS-Box + CB106, taking CAN to pins 3-11 of the DS Box and using the needle connectors on the internal CAN. Do not use this setup on W213/W907/W177 EZS.
Bench work, basic case: AVDI + ZN051 DS Box + CB401 (cable included in the ZN051 set). The ZN051 connects to the AVDI via the CB402.
Bench work on special modules: AVDI + ZN051 DS Box + CB403 DS-Box Extended Cable Set, for direct connection to various automotive/truck modules.
Bench work on Bosch MD1/MG1 ECUs: AVDI + ZN051 DS Box + CB030 Mercedes-Benz MD1/MG1 ECU connection cable.
Specific cases worth remembering: CRR1 (SID307) and CRR1+ (SID310) are done entirely over OBDII; MRG1 and MRD1 on the bench with the CB030 (with or without the ZN051 DS Box); CRR2 (MD1CS006) on the bench with DS Box + CB401; MED41 (MED17.7.7) on the bench with DS Box + CB401; VGS4NAG2 and DSM require the ABProg programmer.
