Reading and writing the coding and changing the VIN on Mercedes Trucks DAS modules

Camion / Bus Interface Classic Coding / Adaptations Advanced ⏱ 30-60 min 9 steps

The coding is the file holding the truck's secondary information, VIN included, and it is what makes the DAS modules integrate correctly. When you replace a module the VIN has to be changed, and the VIN sits inside each module's coding.

Required licences

Hardware / cables

  • AVDI
  • CB106
  • ZN051
⚠ WarningThe coding is NOT saved automatically: save it yourself before you virgin the module, or you risk having to do the coding manually. The coding must be written while the module is personalised and not yet activated: "Activate" is always the last step. The VIN must be 17 characters.

Procedure

  1. Connect the AVDI with the CB106 OBDII cable and the ZN051; for the ECU and TCU add the internal CAN connection.
  2. Open the FBS (DAS) Manager from the Mercedes icon and then the Truck icon.
  3. Before anything else, read the coding from the module you are about to replace using the software's read coding button.
  4. Save the coding file into a folder of your choice: it is not saved automatically and having it saves you a lot of time during the replacement.
  5. If the module is faulty, still try to read the coding: in most cases it works. If the module is water damaged or similar, be ready to do the coding manually.
  6. On the donor module, after "Virgin" and "Personalize", use the write coding button.
  7. When the VIN window appears, enter the receiving truck's VIN (exactly 17 characters) and save.
  8. Finish by pressing "Activate" to confirm to the vehicle that the operations are to be saved.
  9. Check the result by opening the module's "Info" screens and confirming the VIN and data are what you expect.
