Glow Plug Indicator Lamp Circuit — Malfunction
Meaning
The ECM has detected a fault in the glow plug indicator (wait-to-start) lamp circuit. The dashboard lamp does not function correctly or the lamp control signal is abnormal. The glow plug preheating system may still be operational, but the driver does not receive the correct indication.
Common causes
- Burned-out or faulty glow plug indicator bulb or LED
- Open circuit or short circuit in the indicator lamp wiring
- Glow plug control module (GCU) not generating the lamp signal
- Oxidized connector pins at the instrument cluster
- Faulty instrument cluster module
- Blown fuse in the indicator lamp circuit
Symptoms
- No glow plug indicator illumination at ignition on a diesel engine
- Indicator lamp permanently on or blinking abnormally
- No immediate driveability symptom (preheating system may be functional)
- Hard cold start if the preheating system is also affected
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated alongside
Severity
Low: the fault is primarily in the indicator lamp circuit; the preheating system may still be functioning. However, without the indicator the driver has no warning about cold-start readiness.
What to do
- Test lamp circuit function with a scan tool (forced activation)
- Check the circuit fuse and indicator bulb/LED
- Inspect wiring between the GCU and instrument cluster
- Measure GCU output signal toward the indicator lamp
- Replace the bulb, repair wiring or connector as indicated by diagnosis
