Glow Plug Circuit — Malfunction

Meaning

The ECM has detected a general fault in the glow plug preheating circuit. The system is unable to correctly heat the combustion chambers before starting, compromising cold-start combustion in diesel engines.

Common causes

  • Faulty main glow plug relay (preheat relay)
  • Short circuit or open circuit in the main glow plug wiring harness
  • Blown glow plug circuit fuse
  • Faulty glow plug control module (GCU)
  • Insufficient supply voltage to the glow plug circuit
  • Open or high-resistance glow plug circuit ground connection

Symptoms

  • Glow plug indicator absent or abnormal
  • Hard cold start or no-start condition
  • White or grey exhaust smoke during cold start
  • Unstable idle after cold start
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated

Severity

High: without adequate preheating, diesel engines experience severe cold-start difficulties and risk damage from prolonged incomplete combustion.

What to do

  1. Check the preheat relay and glow plug circuit fuse
  2. Measure voltage at the glow plug bus during the preheat cycle
  3. Test each glow plug individually to rule out multiple failures
  4. Check the GCU module and its wiring
  5. Repair wiring or replace faulty components as identified by diagnosis
