Fuel Pump Primary Circuit
Meaning
The ECM detects a generic electrical fault in the primary fuel pump command circuit (relay or direct drive circuit). The circuit does not respond as expected to the on or run command.
Common causes
- Faulty or burnt-out fuel pump relay
- Open fuel pump circuit fuse
- Short or open in the wiring between ECM and pump relay
- Corroded or loose relay connector
- ECM relay output driver failure
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Engine will not start (pump does not activate)
- No pump hum with key in on position
- Engine stalls suddenly and will not restart
- No fuel pressure
Severity
High: without an active fuel pump the engine cannot start or remain running; immediate action required.
What to do
- Check for voltage at the pump relay with key in on position
- Inspect and replace the fuel pump relay
- Check the pump circuit fuse
- Measure wiring continuity between ECM, relay, and pump
- Verify ECM command signal to the relay with a scope or multimeter
