TPS/Accelerator Pedal Sensor B — High Signal
Meaning
The track B signal voltage of the TPS or accelerator pedal position sensor exceeds the maximum acceptable threshold (typically > 4.8 V). A high signal indicates a short to supply voltage or an internally failed sensor on track B.
Common causes
- Short circuit of signal wire B to supply voltage (5 V or 12 V)
- Internal short to positive in the TPS/APP sensor on track B
- Damaged wiring insulation in contact with a positive voltage line
- Shorted connector contacts between signal and supply pins
- ECU fault (rare)
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) on
- Limp-home mode with power limitation
- Abnormal or absent throttle response
- Often associated code P2138
- Possible engine stall
Severity
High: a continuously high TPS B signal simulates wide-open throttle; the ECU activates severely restricted limp-home mode.
What to do
- Measure TPS B signal voltage with connector plugged in: must be < 4.8 V
- Disconnect the sensor and measure voltage on signal wire B: if still high, short to supply in the wiring
- Inspect wiring for contact with positive voltage lines
- Check connector for pin-to-pin short circuits
- Replace the TPS/APP sensor if the short is internal
