TPS/Accelerator Pedal Sensor B — High Signal

Meaning

The track B signal voltage of the TPS or accelerator pedal position sensor exceeds the maximum acceptable threshold (typically > 4.8 V). A high signal indicates a short to supply voltage or an internally failed sensor on track B.

Common causes

  • Short circuit of signal wire B to supply voltage (5 V or 12 V)
  • Internal short to positive in the TPS/APP sensor on track B
  • Damaged wiring insulation in contact with a positive voltage line
  • Shorted connector contacts between signal and supply pins
  • ECU fault (rare)

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light (MIL) on
  • Limp-home mode with power limitation
  • Abnormal or absent throttle response
  • Often associated code P2138
  • Possible engine stall

Severity

High: a continuously high TPS B signal simulates wide-open throttle; the ECU activates severely restricted limp-home mode.

What to do

  1. Measure TPS B signal voltage with connector plugged in: must be < 4.8 V
  2. Disconnect the sensor and measure voltage on signal wire B: if still high, short to supply in the wiring
  3. Inspect wiring for contact with positive voltage lines
  4. Check connector for pin-to-pin short circuits
  5. Replace the TPS/APP sensor if the short is internal
