Crankshaft/Camshaft Correlation — Bank 1 Sensor B
Meaning
The ECU detects a misalignment between the crankshaft position (CKP) and the Bank 1 camshaft B position (CMP). The phase offset exceeds the manufacturer's permitted threshold during engine operation.
Common causes
- Stretched or jumped timing chain
- Sticking or sludge-blocked VVT actuator on Bank 1
- Faulty or intermittent CMP sensor, Bank 1 exhaust side
- Faulty CKP sensor or excessive air gap to reluctor wheel
- Insufficient oil pressure to the VVT actuator
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) on
- Hard start or no-start condition
- Reduced power and rough running
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible timing chain rattle from the engine bay
Severity
High: timing misalignment can cause severe internal engine damage; do not continue driving before diagnosis.
What to do
- Check engine oil level and condition; replace if degraded
- Inspect the timing chain for slack or tooth skip
- Test the VVT actuator: verify oil pressure and flow
- Test the Bank 1 exhaust-side CMP sensor (resistance, oscilloscope waveform)
- Replace the timing chain or VVT actuator if out of specification
