Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1, Sensor A)

Meaning

The ECU detects that the timing between the crankshaft and camshaft is out of correlation. The two signals do not match, indicating a timing misalignment or an imprecise sensor.

Common causes

  • Stretched or jumped timing chain/belt (off by a tooth)
  • Faulty oil control / VVT valve
  • Failed camshaft or crankshaft position sensor
  • Low oil pressure or dirty oil slowing the VVT actuator
  • Damaged reluctor/tone wheel or worn timing tensioner

Symptoms

  • Hard or prolonged starting
  • Metallic rattle from the timing drive
  • Rough running and unstable idle
  • Power loss
  • Check-engine light on

Severity

High: a timing misalignment can lead to mechanical damage; avoid prolonged use until it is verified.

What to do

  1. Read the timing deviation between the camshaft and crankshaft
  2. Check the engine oil level, condition and pressure
  3. Inspect the timing-drive marks (chain/belt, tensioner)
  4. Check the sensors and VVT valve before dismantling the timing drive
