Camshaft Position A — Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
Meaning
The variable valve timing (VVT) on bank 1 is over-advanced or not responding to the ECU's commands. The actual camshaft position does not match the requested value.
Common causes
- Faulty or stuck oil control / VVT solenoid valve
- Low engine oil level or dirty/degraded oil
- VVT oil passages clogged with sludge
- Wear of the VVT actuator or the timing chain/belt
- Faulty solenoid wiring or connector
Symptoms
- Rough idle
- Power loss and weak acceleration
- Possible metallic rattle from the timing drive
- Increased fuel consumption
- Check-engine light on, sometimes stalling
Severity
Moderate: performance and economy worsen; the cause is often low or dirty oil, which should be fixed to avoid wear.
What to do
- Check the engine oil level and condition and respect the change interval
- Read the camshaft timing deviation between commanded and actual values
- Inspect and clean the VVT solenoid and check its wiring
- Check the oil passages and VVT actuator if the solenoid is fine
