VVT Intake Cam Actuator A — Circuit (Bank 1)
Meaning
The engine control module has detected an electrical fault in the variable valve timing (VVT) actuator control circuit for intake camshaft A on Bank 1. The oil control valve (OCV) solenoid is not receiving the correct signal, or the circuit exhibits a short circuit, open, or abnormal resistance.
Common causes
- Faulty or oil-deposit-clogged VVT solenoid (OCV) for intake Bank 1
- VVT solenoid wiring open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power
- Corroded, loose, or damaged solenoid connector
- Blown fuse or faulty relay for the Bank 1 VVT circuit
- Defective ECM output driver for the VVT solenoid
- Supply voltage or ground fault in the VVT circuit
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Rough idle, especially when cold
- Reduced power and torque at mid-range RPM
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible abnormal exhaust smoke
Severity
High: a VVT actuator stuck in a non-optimal position degrades performance and increases fuel consumption; prolonged operation may cause premature timing-drive wear.
What to do
- Measure the VVT solenoid valve resistance and compare with manufacturer specifications
- Verify supply voltage and PWM control signal at the solenoid connector
- Check wiring for shorts to ground or power and circuit continuity
- Clean or replace the VVT solenoid valve if clogged by sludge or oil deposits
- Check engine oil pressure and quality; replace if degraded
