Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor EGT B1S1 — Performance

Meaning

The exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor on bank 1, position 1 (upstream, typically before the diesel oxidation catalyst or DPF) delivers a signal within the permitted range, but the value is not consistent with the expected operating conditions. This is a rationality fault, not an electrical circuit fault.

Common causes

  • Aged or partially failed EGT sensor B1S1 with calibration drift
  • Exhaust gas leaks upstream of the sensor altering the measured temperature
  • Soot deposits or corrosion on the sensor degrading thermal response
  • Blocked or faulty EGR cooler producing abnormal temperatures
  • Extreme operating conditions (aggressive post-injection for DPF regeneration) generating out-of-map temperatures

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Upstream EGT data plausible but not matching ECU models
  • Possible incorrect DPF regeneration or EGR management
  • Possible undetected overtemperature with risk of DPF or catalyst damage
  • Related EGT codes possible (P2084, P2458)

Severity

Moderate: exhaust gas temperature is critical for DPF management and the EGR system; an incorrect reading can lead to failed regenerations or thermal damage to the exhaust system.

What to do

  1. Check EGT sensor B1S1 live data with scan tool and compare with expected values for current speed and load
  2. Physically inspect the sensor for soot deposits, corrosion, or cable damage
  3. Check the exhaust system upstream of the sensor for gas leaks affecting the reading
  4. Verify the correct operation of the EGR cooler and circulation system
  5. Replace the EGT sensor if out of calibration despite intact wiring
