Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

Meaning

The automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature sensor signal is implausible relative to expected operating conditions. The measured value remains fixed or does not change consistently with the transmission warm-up cycle. The transmission control module (TCM) is unable to correctly evaluate fluid temperature.

Common causes

  • Contaminated or degraded ATF altering sensor resistance characteristics
  • Faulty ATF temperature sensor with internal failure
  • Short circuit or open circuit in the sensor wiring harness
  • Oxidized or loose sensor connector
  • Internal TCM fault

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Transmission entering limp mode or fail-safe mode
  • Harsh or delayed gear shifts
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • ATF overheating undetected by the TCM

Severity

Medium to high severity: incorrect temperature data can cause erroneous shift strategies and transmission damage due to undetected fluid overheating.

What to do

  1. Read fault codes with a diagnostic scanner and monitor ATF sensor live data
  2. Check ATF level, colour, and condition; replace if contaminated or burnt
  3. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring harness for oxidation, breaks, or short circuits
  4. Measure ATF temperature sensor resistance and compare against manufacturer specifications
  5. If wiring and sensor test within specification, diagnose the TCM
