Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve A Circuit Open
Meaning
The ECM has detected an open circuit in the control circuit of secondary air injection switching valve A. The open circuit prevents electrical actuation of the solenoid valve.
Common causes
- Broken or severed wire in the harness between ECM and valve connector
- Disconnected valve connector or extracted pin
- Open internal solenoid winding (infinite resistance)
- Blown fuse in the auxiliary circuit
- Severe corrosion at the connector causing electrical discontinuity
Symptoms
- MIL light on, DTC P0413 stored
- Secondary air switching valve completely inactive
- Secondary air injection system inoperative
- Elevated HC and CO emissions during warm-up phase
- No valve response observed on diagnostic scanner
Severity
Medium severity: the valve is completely out of service due to the open circuit; no immediate driving hazard, but the emission reduction system is disabled.
What to do
- Read DTCs and check for additional wiring-related codes
- Visually inspect the harness from ECM to valve for breaks, pinches, or disconnected terminals
- Measure circuit resistance with a multimeter: an infinite reading (OL) confirms the open circuit
- Perform continuity check from the ECM control pin to the valve connector
- Repair the broken wiring or replace the valve with an open solenoid, then clear the code
