NOx Emissions Exceeded — EGR Deactivated

Meaning

The ECU has detected that nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions exceed the compliance threshold and has deactivated the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system as a protective measure. P2BAC indicates that the NOx abatement system is not functioning correctly and the vehicle is not meeting emission limits.

Common causes

  • Non-functioning SCR/AdBlue system (insufficient reductant quality, level, or dosing)
  • EGR stuck closed or with insufficient flow, causing excessive combustion temperatures
  • Faulty upstream or downstream NOx sensors providing incorrect data to the ECU
  • Deteriorated or poisoned SCR catalyst with insufficient NOx reduction
  • Fault in the urea dosing system (AdBlue pump, injector) interrupting NOx reduction
  • ECU calibration issue or failed emission system learning

Symptoms

  • Check engine and emissions warning lights on
  • EGR disabled by the ECU (possible increase in combustion temperature)
  • High NOx values readable with a scan tool
  • Possible power reduction or limp mode
  • Vehicle may fail emissions compliance testing

Severity

High: this code indicates the vehicle exceeds legal NOx emission limits; the ECU has disabled EGR for protection, but without correcting the root cause the situation worsens.

What to do

  1. Check AdBlue level, quality, and dosing system (is P207F also present?)
  2. Read live NOx sensor values upstream/downstream and compare with specifications
  3. Inspect EGR: valve position, actual flow, and control circuit
  4. Check SCR catalyst condition via efficiency test with a scan tool
  5. Resolve all related DTC codes (P207F, P2200–P2202, EGR codes) before addressing P2BAC
