NOx Emissions Exceeded — EGR Deactivated
Meaning
The ECU has detected that nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions exceed the compliance threshold and has deactivated the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system as a protective measure. P2BAC indicates that the NOx abatement system is not functioning correctly and the vehicle is not meeting emission limits.
Common causes
- Non-functioning SCR/AdBlue system (insufficient reductant quality, level, or dosing)
- EGR stuck closed or with insufficient flow, causing excessive combustion temperatures
- Faulty upstream or downstream NOx sensors providing incorrect data to the ECU
- Deteriorated or poisoned SCR catalyst with insufficient NOx reduction
- Fault in the urea dosing system (AdBlue pump, injector) interrupting NOx reduction
- ECU calibration issue or failed emission system learning
Symptoms
- Check engine and emissions warning lights on
- EGR disabled by the ECU (possible increase in combustion temperature)
- High NOx values readable with a scan tool
- Possible power reduction or limp mode
- Vehicle may fail emissions compliance testing
Severity
High: this code indicates the vehicle exceeds legal NOx emission limits; the ECU has disabled EGR for protection, but without correcting the root cause the situation worsens.
What to do
- Check AdBlue level, quality, and dosing system (is P207F also present?)
- Read live NOx sensor values upstream/downstream and compare with specifications
- Inspect EGR: valve position, actual flow, and control circuit
- Check SCR catalyst condition via efficiency test with a scan tool
- Resolve all related DTC codes (P207F, P2200–P2202, EGR codes) before addressing P2BAC
