DPF — Excessive Soot Accumulation
Meaning
The soot load level accumulated in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has exceeded the maximum limit calculated by the ECU. The filter is saturated and it has not been possible to reduce the particulate load through passive or active regeneration.
Common causes
- Predominantly short, low-speed driving cycles preventing passive regeneration
- Malfunction of the active regeneration system (post-injection, diesel oxidation catalyst DOC)
- DPF partially blocked by non-combustible ash from high mileage
- Failed upstream DOC not raising temperature sufficiently
- High oil consumption contributing to accelerated ash accumulation
- Faulty differential pressure sensor overestimating the soot load
Symptoms
- DPF warning light permanently on
- Limp mode activated (significant power reduction)
- Markedly increased fuel consumption
- Black smoke from the exhaust
- Automatic regeneration not possible
Severity
High: DPF saturation can cause irreversible damage to the filter, turbocharger, and cylinder head from excessive back-pressure; urgent action is required.
What to do
- Attempt a stationary forced regeneration via scan tool in a safe location
- If forced regeneration fails or load does not drop, proceed with professional DPF cleaning
- Check the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and post-injection system
- Check engine oil level and quality (use only low-SAPS oil)
- Replace the DPF if the substrate is damaged or fully saturated with non-removable ash
