O2 Sensor Signal Stuck Lean — Bank 1, Sensor 1

Meaning

The upstream lambda sensor on bank 1 persistently reports a lean mixture signal without the expected oscillations during closed-loop control. The ECU cannot achieve a stoichiometric mixture despite fuel trim corrections.

Common causes

  • Faulty or contaminated O2 sensor B1S1 (signal stuck at lean value)
  • Air leaks downstream of the MAF sensor causing a genuinely lean mixture
  • Clogged or low-flow injectors on bank 1
  • Low fuel pressure (pump, regulator, filter)
  • Faulty MAF sensor reporting excessive airflow
  • EVAP system leak introducing unmeasured air

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) on
  • Bank 1 long-term fuel trim (LTFT) strongly positive
  • Possible power loss or stumble on acceleration
  • Possible rough idle
  • Elevated HC emissions at test

Severity

Moderate to high: a chronically lean mixture can raise combustion temperatures, cause knock, and over time damage the catalyst or engine internals.

What to do

  1. Read bank 1 STFT/LTFT fuel trims to confirm lean tendency
  2. Check for intake air leaks downstream of the MAF (hoses, gaskets, couplings)
  3. Measure fuel pressure at idle and compare to OEM specification
  4. Monitor O2 sensor B1S1 signal in real time: if it does not oscillate around 0.45 V, the sensor is faulty
  5. Check bank 1 injector flow balance
