Shift Solenoid B Performance/Stuck Off

Meaning

The transmission control module has detected that shift solenoid B (SSB) is not delivering the expected hydraulic pressure: the solenoid is stuck in the de-energised (off) position or its performance does not match the command signal.

Common causes

  • SSB solenoid mechanically stuck in the open (off) position due to deposits or wear
  • Valve body with SSB valve blocked by sediment
  • Degraded or contaminated ATF impairing hydraulic switching
  • Clogged ATF filter reducing available pressure
  • Open electrical circuit to SSB solenoid
  • Internal TCM fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Failure to engage or abnormal engagement in SSB-governed gears
  • Transmission in limp mode
  • Harsh or missing gear changes
  • Transmission overheating due to incorrect gear ratio

Severity

High: a stuck-off SSB impairs gear selection and causes accelerated clutch wear.

What to do

  1. Check ATF level and condition; replace if degraded
  2. Test SSB solenoid with a scan tool (commanded activation)
  3. Measure SSB solenoid resistance and verify supply at the connector
  4. Check hydraulic pressure in the SSB circuit with a gauge
  5. Replace SSB solenoid or clean/overhaul the valve body
