Shift Solenoid B Malfunction
Meaning
The transmission control module has detected a fault in the shift solenoid B (SSB) circuit. The solenoid does not respond correctly to the command signal, causing abnormal behaviour in the gears governed by SSB.
Common causes
- Internally defective SSB solenoid (open or shorted coil)
- Short to ground or short to battery in the SSB control wire
- Open circuit in wiring to SSB
- Oxidised or loose connectors on the transmission housing
- Valve body obstruction in the SSB solenoid channel
- Internal TCM fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Transmission fails to engage or engages abnormally in SSB-controlled gears
- Transmission in limp mode
- Harsh or erratic gear shifts
- Slipping in certain gears
Severity
High: the SSB circuit fault impairs gear selection and can cause progressive clutch damage.
What to do
- Check ATF level and condition
- Measure SSB solenoid resistance with a multimeter (typically 10–15 Ω)
- Check supply voltage and command signal at the SSB connector
- Inspect wiring for shorts or open circuits
- Replace SSB solenoid if outside specification or valve body if obstructed
