Torque Converter Clutch — Lock-up Failed
Meaning
The torque converter lock-up clutch does not engage or slips relative to the command. The ECU detects a larger-than-expected difference between engine and turbine speed when lock-up should be closed.
Common causes
- Faulty TCC solenoid or open electrical circuit
- Degraded, dirty or wrong-level transmission fluid
- Worn torque converter
- Valve body with leaks or blocked passages
- Faulty solenoid wiring/connector
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Engine RPM 'floating' at steady speed
- Higher fuel consumption on the motorway
- Possible vibration or shudder at lock-up
Severity
Moderate: the transmission often goes into limp mode; drivable but with more consumption and heat, do not neglect.
What to do
- Check transmission fluid level and quality
- Command and measure the TCC solenoid with the scan tool
- Check the solenoid wiring and connector
- Assess the valve body or converter if the electrics are healthy
