Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected

Meaning

The ECM has detected that airflow in the secondary air injection system does not match the commanded state. Flow may be absent when expected, present when not commanded, or outside the expected flow rate limits.

Common causes

  • Check valve stuck open or closed
  • Secondary air pump delivering insufficient or excessive flow
  • Leaks in air ducts altering flow to exhaust ports
  • Switching valve (solenoid) failing to open or close correctly
  • Partial blockage in hoses or air inlet passages
  • Faulty oxygen sensor influencing flow diagnosis

Symptoms

  • MIL light on, DTC P0411 stored
  • Elevated HC and CO emissions
  • Possible burnt smell or abnormal exhaust gases
  • Abnormal oxygen sensor readings during cold-start phase
  • Failure of emissions inspection

Severity

Medium severity: incorrect flow causes out-of-specification emissions and can reduce catalyst efficiency; does not present an immediate driving hazard.

What to do

  1. Read all DTCs and monitor live O2 sensor data during cold start
  2. Inspect check valves to confirm correct one-way flow operation
  3. Check the integrity of all hoses and fittings in the secondary air circuit
  4. Verify correct operation of the switching valve using a diagnostic scanner and electrical testing
  5. Replace faulty check valves or damaged hoses and rerun the diagnostic cycle
